The Guardian has revealed intelligence reports suggesting that the Syrian regime has begun transporting sensitive parts of chemical weapons across the country in recent days, raising fears that the regime is seeking to use chemicals as a weapon against opposition forces.

In this context, CNN quoted a US official as saying that the Syrian regime has begun incorporating chemicals that can be used to make the deadly sarin gas, to use them as a weapon to attack opposition forces and the civilian population.

The network added that the United States obtained intelligence over the weekend indicating this development, according to an official with direct knowledge of the latest information on the Syrian file.

The official said the intelligence came from multiple sources, declining to provide any further details on how the United States obtained it, while the network indicated sarin gas could easily be used to fill artillery shells.

A second source, another U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “It’s not just about movement (moving chemical weapons), it’s about the potential intention to make some chemical weapons ready for use.”

The network said that US officials are concerned that the regime may use chemical weapons to crush its opponents, as the fighting approaches Damascus, leading to the temporary closure of Damascus International Airport.
