throughout the Security Council meeting, the United States declared that impunity for the Syrian regime’s use of chemical weapons is unacceptable.
During his speech to the UN Security Council on September 5, 2024, US Deputy Representative to the United Nations Robert Wood explained that the regime did not respect the Security Council resolutions and decisions on the background of chemical weapons and repeatedly used them against Syrians.
During the meeting, Wood recalled Resolution 2118 that individuals responsible for the use of chemical weapons in Syria must be held accountable. In addition, He confirmed that despite all the interventions taken by the Security Council and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, the Syrian regime failed in implementing the sentences and showed total neglection towards Security Council resolutions and decisions, as well as towards victims including men, women children and elderly who suffered and died due to the chemical attacks.
Adding that despite the large number of evidence issued by international investigations which condemning the Syrian regime, it still refuses to comply fully with the Chemical Weapons Convention by submitting a full and verifiable report on its chemical program and arsenals, calling on the regime to be responsible for the killings it has committed against Syrian citizens.
It is worth saying that the latest Security Council meeting coincided with the 11th anniversary of the adoption of Resolution 2118 in 2013.
