The United Kingdom Representative expressed fears about the possibility that the Syrian regime develops and produces chemical weapons on a high scale without announcing it, as observing the Syrian regime’s failure to determine the fate of thousands of weapons and hundreds of tons of chemicals.
In her speech to the UN Security Council on September 5, 2024, UK Representative Jess Gambert Gray said that the Syrian regime’s continued non-compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention “has serious consequences for both regional and international security.
Gray said that since Syrian President Bashar al-Assad first use of chemical weapons against Syrian civilians in 2013, chemical weapons have been used repeatedly in Iraq, Malaysia and Ukraine. Gray added that the repeated use of those chemical weapons in Syria and all countries cannot become normal.
The representative of the United Kingdom called on Syrian regime to comply with the OPCW and all Council members to clarify their opposition against the use of chemical weapons anywhere.
It is worth noting that The Security Council meeting has come in coincided with the 11th anniversary of the adoption of Resolution 2118 in 2013, and the countries participating in the meeting assessed the Syrian regime’s cooperation with the chemical weapons issue.
