On the Anniversary of the Khan Sheikhoun and Douma Attacks, the United States Calls for Accountability of the Syrian Regime

During a Security Council briefing in March, the U.S. representative urged the international community to hold the Syrian regime accountable. Robert Wood, the U.S. Deputy Permanent Representative for Political Affairs at the United Nations, called on the Syrian regime to fulfill its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention and UN Security Council Resolution 2118.

Speaking at the Security Council meeting on chemical weapons in March 2024, Wood commemorated the victims of the horrific chemical attacks carried out by the Assad regime in Khan Sheikhoun (2017) and Douma (2018).

The ambassador reaffirmed the United States’ commitment, alongside the Security Council and partner nations, to addressing the threat posed by the Assad regime and ensuring that it never again terrorizes the Syrian people “with chemical weapons.”

During the previous year’s UN meeting, Ambassador Wood emphasized that the Syrian regime “continues to flagrantly disregard its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention and persistently defies UN Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 2118.”

On June 5, 2018, the United States announced its boycott of the United Nations Conference on Disarmament in protest of the Syrian regime’s actions, which was presiding over the UN Forum on Chemical and Nuclear Disarmament in Geneva, attended by 65 countries.
