Residents of the western countryside of Damascus reported a foul odor following Israeli airstrikes that targeted the Scientific Research Center in Jumrayah, near Damascus, on the evening of March 31, 2024.

Residents described the pervasive odors as similar to sulfur or chlorine, with others comparing them to insecticides or burning wires.

Eyewitnesses confirmed to the Chemical Violations Documentation Center in Syria that the smells were noticeable in western Damascus areas such as the Project Dummar and Qudsaya neighborhoods, extending to the Mezzeh area within the capital.

These odors have caused panic and anxiety among residents, especially given that they followed the attack on the Scientific Research Center, which the Syrian regime used for manufacturing chemical weapons. This situation heightens concerns and fears about the regime’s potential continuation of producing these internationally banned weapons.

The Chemical Violations Documentation Center of Syria (CVDCS) calls on the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and all member states to hold the Assad regime accountable for fulfilling its international obligations to dismantle and destroy all chemical weapons.
