Sarin gas is one of the most toxic chemical weapons, and has been used since World War II, and is a gas banned under international law.
After liquid sarin is swallowed, the gas comes into contact with the skin or eyes, or is inhaled, its effects can vary depending on the manner, amount, and duration of exposure.
The Syrian regime has used sarin gas as a chemical weapon against civilians in several attacks, most notably the Ghouta attack (in Damascus countryside) in 2013, and the Al-Lataminah (in Hama countryside) and Khan Sheikhoun (in Idlib countryside) attacks in 2017.
The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has classified sarin as a chemical that is prohibited from being possessed, retained or used “except for specific research purposes.”
