What are Chemical Weapon Agents and How Do They Affect the Human Body?

Chemical weapons are classified based on their effects on humans into four groups:

  1. Nerve Agents: These affect the nervous system, potentially leading to death. The most notable example is sarin gas.
  1. Blister Agents: These cause blistering and burns on the skin, leading to ulcers. Sulfur mustard is one of the most prominent agents in this group.
  1. Choking Agents: These affect the respiratory system, causing symptoms such as suffocation and vomiting. Chlorine is a key agent in this category.
  2. Blood Agents: These prevent oxygen from reaching the cells from the lungs, leading to internal suffocation. Arsenic is one of the primary agents in this group.

Three out of these four types of agents have been used in Syria during chemical attacks.
