From Ypres to Syria: Chemical Weapons Still in Use Despite International Ban

Chemical weapons were first used in 1915 when the German army launched an attack on the city of Ypres in Belgium with chlorine gas.

After the end of the World War, officials banned the use of chemical weapons in wars, resulting in several agreements, the most notable being the Chemical Weapons Convention of 1993. Despite this, chemical weapons have been used against civilians in Syria 262 times since 2013, according to documentation by the Syrian Center for Chemical Violations.
