On April 19, 2024, during their meeting on the island of Capri, Italy, the G7 foreign ministers issued a statement renewing their condemnation of the Syrian regime’s use of chemical weapons in Syria.
The ministers from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, along with the High Representative of the United Nations, urged the Syrian regime to comply with its obligations under UN Security Council Resolution 2118 and the Chemical Weapons Convention. They called for the complete and verifiable elimination of its chemical weapons program.
The G7 foreign ministers reaffirmed their commitment to promoting justice for the victims and holding all actors responsible for violations of international law in Syria accountable, including violations of humanitarian and international human rights law.
The statement emphasized that normalization, reconstruction, and lifting of sanctions would only be considered within the framework of a comprehensive, lasting, and credible political process consistent with UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
The ministers reiterated their commitment to a Syrian-led political process in line with Resolution 2254 and called on the Syrian regime to participate “meaningfully” in the UN-led political process to achieve a “peaceful solution” within a comprehensive, lasting, and credible political process consistent with Resolution 2254.
